We are all here today because we all have roots. A family we came from. A genealogy rich with lives, loves, achievements, joys and trials. Our family history defines part of who we are. Understanding where we came from connects us to both past and future.
Unfortunately, our society has become fragmented. As a society we are mobile – and families are often separated by thousands of miles and have lost their ability to share the family stories that have bound them together for thousands of years.
In different hours, a man represents each of several of his ancestors, as if there were seven or eight of us rolled up in each man’s skin,—seven or eight ancestors at least, and they constitute the variety of notes for that new piece of music which his life is.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Knowing where we came from not only serves the purposes of our psychological well being – in this day and age it also serves many of our medical needs as well. Many illnesses and diseases are passed from generation to generation – and knowledge of our family history can only serve us in planning for our own future.
The great news is that with the advent of technology – we are now able to better communicate over the miles that separate us and gather the stories that have been lost. Learning that our uncle was a famous inventor, or that our family were United Empire Loyalists, brings a renewed understanding of the talents, skills and experience that we have in our genes.
Knowing our past not only helps us prepare for the future but it also re-connects us to who we are. Roots for the oak – feed the tree. Unlocking the past and learning of our own roots can do the same for us.
At Family History Simplified – we believe roots are important – and we can help you reconnect with your past.
